Karma Couture Hit by Fraudsters

The culprit or culprits allegedly placed five orders in April with a stolen credit card.

East Greenwich police are investigating a fraud that occurred at Karma Couture last week in which someone bought jewelry worth thousands over the Internet from the store with a stolen credit card.

Police said a manager of the store reported on May 13 that someone placed five orders on the store's Web site in April by a woman claiming to be Ashley Porter.

The orders were shipped to two different addresses in Texas, police said, and all were received with signature confirmation.

The folks at the store found out on May 13 that the card used in the transactions was reported stolen and the credit card company reversed the charges.

Police said the store owners had been in contact with Texas police about the purchases.

Police are investigating.

The stolen merchandise consisted of a Judith Leiber gold ring valued at $166.24; a 14 karat gold 6-stone diamond ring valued at $325; a 14 karat white gold three-stone blue topaz ring valued at $225; a 14 karat David Yurman silver citrine cable valued at $1,250; an 18 karat Ross-Simons .90CT3 band ring valued at $633.75 and a Baume and Mercier 18 karat plated stainless watch valued at $608.
