Saturday was a perfect fall day for a drive to northern RI to watch the EG Avenger football team play the Burrillville Broncos. In what seemed like one of the longest games this season, the Avengers scored on a touchdown by Mike Massella with a little more than three minutes left in the first quarter. With a 6-0 lead, EG’s quarterback Andrew Miner left the field for a drive, leaving the ball with Nick Andreozzi. Miner returned to the game in the second quarter with a nearly 60 year pass to Egan Reale who ran in for a touchdown, followed with a successful PAT from Brett Estes.
The Avenger defense couldn’t hold back Bronco’s “Johnny Football” Thornhill on a running touchdown, followed by a PAT from freshman starter Thomas Gieseke. The following drive left EG punting the ball back to the Bronco’s, who scored again on a quarterback keeper by Isaiah DeSilva followed with an extra point from Gieseke.
With the Bronco’s in the lead 14-13 after the half, one of the Bronco’s players was injured on the first drive resulting in a long time out. Getting back into the game, the Avengers were unable to advance and once again had to punt back to Burrillville. The Bronco’s scored again on a running touchdown with a successful PAT leaving the score 21-13. Miner came back with a long touchdown pass to Massella, closing the gap to 21-19.

Burrillville came back in the fourth quarter with another running touchdown by Thornhill and an extra point by Gieseke. The Avengers countered with a long pass to Dillan White resulting in a touchdown, followed by an extra point from Estes closing the gap to just two points. Burrillville’s next drive ended in a punt, leaving the Avengers with the ball, but little time on the clock. Miner once again made a long pass, this time to Estes, for a touchdown giving the Avengers a 32-28 lead. With seconds left in the game, Burrillville fumbled their punt return allowing EG to recover the ball, allowing the clock to run down and giving the Avengers the win.
Cheer on the Avengers when they play Thanksgiving rival Narragansett on Wednesday, November 27th at 6:00 pm at home on Carcieri Field. Come early to support the Senior players, who will be recognized prior to the game.
