Main Street Comings And Goings

We'll blame the weather, but it's been a while since we checked in on the happenings on Main Street and things are happening! We've lost Audra's, Sassy & Classy, and Skyleen Mustang, but Hill & Harbour Veterinarian Center is now open and David-Max  – a home furnishings shop – plans to open April 1.

Keith and Amy Schoen are behind Hill & Harbour Veterinary Center, next door to Back to Basics. Keith is the vet and he said his emphasis will be service to please both pets and their owners. They took over the lease last summer. With renovations finished, they are open and taking patients. Visit their website here, call (401) 398-7808, or stop by.

On the opposite side of the street a few blocks north, David-Max is perhaps the first store to sell new furniture on Main Street since Ross Aker Furniture closed decades ago. But David-Max is not just a furniture store, according to owner Courtney Calcione. She calls it a "home goods and artist boutique."

It's kind of a cross between Pottery Barn and Anthropologie, with an emphasis on locally made furniture and furnishings.

Here's how the website describes it: “David-Max was started with the idea of identifying local talent and providing them with a chic and elegant showcase to display their creations to our discerning patrons.”

"I wanted to create an environment with all my passions," said Calcione.

The store will sell small things like greeting cards, candles, and textiles as well as large, handmade, one-of-a-kind beds – "little bit of everything," she said. 

Calcione lives in Cranston but is crazy about EG's Main Street. She said it reminds her of a smaller Portland, Maine. 

"This is the environment – to me it’s homey," she said. "I love the historical aspects to it."

The shop will open April 1, Calcione said, with a grand opening May 1.

In other Main Street news, Scribe has moved from shared digs with Sprigs to shared digs with B&H Framing a block away (at 514 Main St.). Calligrapher Jane Parillo said she wanted more visibility. 

Perle nail salon has moved to Greenwich Village (1050 Main Street). There's no official word what might be going in the space (between Symposium Books and Searles Ice Cream), but one rumor is a frozen yogurt shop. Hmmm.

As for the "goings" on Main Street, Audra's of East Greenwich seems to have closed its doors for good. One patron told me Groupon had contacted him to tell him the coupon for Audra's he'd purchased could be refunded. This was the second incarnation of Audra's, the first having lasted for more than a decade. This version, sadly, didn't make it a year. 

In addition, Skyleen Mustang – a western-style dress shop at 176 Main St. – has closed its doors, as had Sassy & Classy, the site David-Max has taken over.
