Police Log: Cop Cars Damaged by Wet Paint, Dog Hurt in Hit and Run, 2 DUIs

The following arrests and incidents were reported by East Greenwich Police. They do not indicate a conviction.

CRUISERS DAMAGED
Two East Greenwich police cruisers were damaged by wet paint after a road striping crew used no cones or signs to warn drivers the double yellow line had been freshly painted.

On Aug. 18 at around 10:05 p.m., an officer on patrol turned onto South Pierce Road and saw a dump truck parked on the road with yellow flashing lights.

The officer passed the truck and only then noticed an orange sign on the back of the truck that said “caution wet paint.”

The officer realized he had just crossed over the lines and saw a second truck -- the actual painting truck -- up ahead towards the end of South Pierce Road.

Both trucks then turned left onto Middle Road, at which point they were stopped by police.

The job foreman told police that the owner of the company was given the OK to do the job by the town. The company name displayed on the truck was Hiway Safety Systems Inc., police said.

Once back at the police station, the officer reported finding yellow paint on both passenger side fenders of the police cruiser, a 2014 Ford.

Another officer reported damage to his cruiser, a 2011 Ford, after clearing a call on Fairfield Drive and driving on South Pierce Road.

That officer said he drove on the street at around 11 p.m. and the damage consisted of wet paint splatter on the drivers’ side tires, wheel well and fenders.

KEYED
A woman told police on Aug. 19 that someone keyed her Mini while it was parked at Outback Steak House either Aug. 16 or 17.

Police are investigating.

DOMESTIC
Police charged Michael James Carbary, 25, of 162 Main St., East Greenwich, with domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct Aug. 19 at 7:35 p.m.

Police said they were dispatched to the Greenwich Hotel at around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance.

Police said Carbary allegedly choked a woman during a confrontation.

A television was knocked over during the altercation.

DOG FOUND
An East Greenwich police officer transported a small white dog to North Kingstown Animal Hospital that was seen crossing First Avenue with no owner, tags or identification on Aug. 20 at around 3:20 a.m.

Police said the dog was a small white Scottish terrier mix and weighed between 5 and 10 pounds. Its fur was matted and stained by urine.

“The dog appeared very disarranged and was extremely dirty,” a police report stated.

The incident was forwarded to the Animal Control Officer, who reported that the dog was returned to its owner, identified by police as a 35-year-old Mawney Street woman, at around 2:30 p.m.

DOG HIT AND RUN
Police said a dog was struck by a passing vehicle on First Avenue on Aug. 23 and the driver left the scene.

Police said they were dispatched to the area near the cemetery and found the dog’s owner, identified by police as a 35-year-old Warwick resident.

The man said he parked and went across the street to buy food at the hot dog stand.

The dog, still in the car, squeezed out of the opened window and was struck by a small teal blue SUV heading west on First Avenue.

Police said the dog suffered serious injuries to its left eye and was transported to Ocean State Veterinary Hospital on South County Trail.

Police were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

DUIs
Police charged Christoper W. Mossey, 45, of 105 Sheep Farm Drive, East Greenwich, with driving under the influence and refusing a chemical test Aug. 23 at 8:29 p.m.

Police said Mossey was driving erratically on First Avenue, prompting a call from a concerned motorist.

A nearby officer soon found the caller driving on First Avenue with emergency flashers on. The dispatcher told the caller to pull over, which allowed the officer to get behind Mossey, who reportedly swerved out of his lane twice before he was eventually stopped at the intersection of Division Street and Briarbrook Road.

Mosseyy reportedly told police he was coming from La Masseria Restaurant on Main Street and had “a couple drinks.”

He later failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody without incident.

Police charged Nicole N. Green, 28, of 291 Vermont Ave., Providence, with driving under the influence Aug. 25 at 12:52 a.m.

Police said Green was observed swerving in and out of her lane and over the double yellow line as well as driving in the breakdown lane for several seconds on Division Street.

Green reportedly stopped in the middle of the road when officers began flashing their overhead lights and had to be instructed to pull to the side of the road over a PA microphone.

Police said Green showed signs of intoxication and failed a field sobriety test at the scene.

She was taken into custody without incident and police notified the state Department of Children, Youth and Families after they learned that she was pregnant.
