WEST GREENWICH, RI —A North Carolina resident was charged Thursday in Providence federal court with firearms and drug trafficking charges. According to the U.S. Attorney's office, the case against Anthony Moniz Thompson, 39, of Charlotte, stems from a car stop in I-95 on June 20. State police allege they found illegal drugs and loaded, high-powered firearms in his vehicle, along with camouflage equipment and night-vision goggles.

He is charged with being a felon in possession of firearms, possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of MDMA (or Molly), and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

According to court papers, Thompson tried to run away. Police allege he shoved a trooper into a travel lane of the highway, and then fled along the highway. Police used a Taser to take him down.
