East Providence, RI – Eight Bay View Academy Upper School students from Cranston, Pawtucket, Providence, East Providence and Hope, RI, have received honors and awards for accomplishments in the study of the Italian language. The awards are being given by the Rhode Island Teachers of Italian (RITI) and the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI).
Alexandra Coppa, a senior from Cranston, RI, has been awarded the 2013 RITI Advisory Board Monetary Award. This $300.00 award is given to a student of Italian IV or V who has maintained an A- average for all years of Italian studied.
Eduara Macera, a senior from Hope, RI, has been awarded the 2013 RITI Women’s Youth League of RI Scholarship, which carries a $250 prize. This award is given to a student who is enrolled in Advanced Placement Italian, has an average of 90 or above, and plans to pursue the study of the Italian language at the university level.

Emily Correia, a senior from Pawtucket, RI, has been awarded a 2013 RITI Luigi Petrarca Book Award, which is given to five high school students who have maintained an A or A+ average in Italian studies. Emily also took the Italian IV, AATI National Exam and scored third in the State and received an Honorable Mention for a ninth place national ranking. For this she will receive a $50.00 check from RITI and a certificate from AATI.

Three Bay View students received recognition for the AATI National Italian Exam for Italian III. Brianna Almonte, a junior from Cranston, RI, scored fifth in the State and will receive an Honorable Mention certificate from AATI for placing 15th nationally. Bruna Lima, a senior from East Providence, will also receive an Honorable Mention certificate for placing eleventh in the state and 19th nationally.
Azzurra Catucci, a junior from Pawtucket, RI, has won two awards, one from the RITI and one from the AATI. The first is RITI’s 2013 Renaissance Alliance Lodge OSIA Outstanding Merit Award, which carries a $100.00 prize and is based on an oral interview conducted in Italian. Azzurra also scored second in the State on the AATI Italian III Exam, and an Honorable Mention for ranking ninth nationally. For this honor she will receive a $75.00 check from RITI and a certificate from AATI.
Based on the AATI National Italian Exam for Italian II, Marcella Mazzenga, a sophomore from Cranston, RI, placed third in the State and received an honorable mention for ranking 13th nationally. She will receive a $50.00 check from RITI and a certificate from AATI.
Also in Italian II Olivia Hewitt, a sophomore from Providence, RI, placed fifth in the State as a result of the AATI National Italian Exam and will receive a certificate from AATI for placing 15th nationally.
