Barrington Gasoline Thief Turns Himself In

An East Providence man, 21, has been charged by Barrington police with stealing several 5-gallon cans of gasoline last fall.

Mario Ferreira, of 17 Arlington St., turned himself in to police on Monday afternoon, Jan. 23, after an investigation by detectives. He faces three counts of larceny under $500 and one count of attempted larceny under $500.

Police Chief John LaCross said Ferreira admitted driving his vehicle around Barrington when it needed to be refueled and he had no money. He looked for boats in marinas or sheds in backyards that might hold 5-gallon cans of gasoline, the chief said.

In one case, said LaCross, Ferreira admitted pilfering two cans from one shed that filled up his car for about a week. He was arraigned and released with a court date.

‘Cat walker’ faces marijuana charge

An East Providence man, 38, has also been charged by Barrington police with possession of marijuana.

Dennis P. Perry, of 188 Narragansett Ave., was observed by a patrol officer at 1:20 am on Thursday, Jan. 26, stopped in the southbound lane of Washington Road near South Lake Drive.  He had his head down and facing the passenger seat, police said.

The officer, who was traveling north on Washington Road, pulled over to determine if Perry needed assistance. He smelled the odor of marijuana and observed that Perry was jittery and sweating.

Perry initially said he was stopped because he planned to take his cat for a walk on South Lake Drive, police said. There was no cat in the vehicle. But there was a Ziploc bag of marijuana and a smoking pipe, police said.

Perry was arraigned and held overnight at the police station before being released with a court date.
