BAY VIEW ACADEMY ATHLETES HONORED FOR SKILL AND SPORTSMANSHIP

Bay View Academy Athletics held its 17th Annual Awards Banquet at the end of May, for all students participating in athletics in the Academy’s Upper School during the 2013-2014 academic year. The event was attended by 318 athletes, coaches and parents, representing grades nine through twelve.

The following student-athletes received special athletic honors.

Providence Journal Scholar-Athlete Nominee: *Alexandra Scala, Senior, East Providence, RI. Alexa also won Bay View’s Scholar-Athlete Award. Alexa was the third ranked student for Bay View’s class of 2014. She will attend Brown University in the fall. See below for more information

BAY VIEW AWARDS FOR SENIOR ATHLETES

Albin Moser Excellence in Rowing Award: Erin Dolan (North Kingstown, RI) and Michaela McGuirl (Lincoln, RI)

Go-the-Distance Award: This award is given to a senior athlete who participates in a varsity sport for a minimum of 2 years, and has demonstrated extraordinary effort in practices and competitions. May also include someone who has overcome an injury, illness, or other hardship and has still given 110% to her sport. Also, someone who may have worked tirelessly to develop a new sports program at Bay View. Must have the endorsement of the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the Athletic Directors, and the Coaches. The recipients of the Go-the-Distance Award are Cristina Marsocci (North Scituate, RI) and Katherine Schreck (Providence, RI).

Sister Margaret Murphy Award for Dedication to School and Sport: This award was established in 2000 to honor the late Sister Margaret Murphy RSM, a long time, dedicated supporter of Bay View Athletics. It is given to a senior athlete who has demonstrated dedication to school and athletics. The recipient has placed her school and team above her own personal goals. She is able to handle responsibility, make mature decisions, and embrace the spiritual qualities set forth in the philosophy of Bay View. The recipient is nominated by the Athletic Directors with the assistance of the Principal and the Assistant Principal along with input from the coach. The recipients this year are Paige Monk* (Rehoboth, MA) and Audrey Robinson (Lincoln, RI).

Sister Faith Harding Spirit of Sport Award: In order to win this award, the student-athlete must have participated in a minimum of one sport in the 11th grade and one sport in the 12th grade. She must have demonstrated enthusiasm and active support for Bay View Academy Athletic Teams by showing up to support other Bay View athletic events and activities as listed under the sportswomanship criteria. She must also have the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the Athletic Directors, and the Coach’s endorsement. The recipients this year are Molly Burke (East Greenwich, RI) and Meaghan Whittum (East Providence, RI).

Alice Sullivan Award for Leadership in Sport: The Alice Sullivan Award is given to a senior athlete who has demonstrated leadership in athletics both on and off the playing fields, courts, etc. and has been involved in more than one sports team. This athlete should embody the ideals set forth by the late Alice Sullivan. She should demonstrate excellent character in her decisions and in her relationships with her teammates, coaches, teachers, administrators and opponents. The winner is nominated by the Athletic Directors with the approval of the Principal and the Assistant Principal along with input from the coach. This year, the Alice Sullivan Award recipients are Michaela McGuirl (Lincoln, RI), Stephanie Ricci (Cranston, RI) and Emma Alfred (Warren, RI).

Sister Elizabeth McAuliffe Award for Sportsmanship: The Sister Elizabeth McAuliffe Award is given to a student-athlete who has played a minimum of two varsity sports with, at least one in the senior year. She must display respect, leadership and a positive attitude both on and off the courts and playing fields. She must also display leadership skills and be a positive role model for others by participating in the some of the following: Team Captain, Captain's Club, Pep Rally Committee, Athletic Advisory Committee, Athletic Department Open House, Evening Athletic Education Programs, Conferences and other similar activities. The Award winner has the endorsement of the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the Athletic Directors, and the Coaches of teams on which the candidate played. The recipients of the Sister Elizabeth McAuliffe award are Taylor Coffey (Warwick, RI) and Danielle Grace (East Providence, RI).

Above and Beyond Award: The Above and Beyond Award is given to someone deemed worthy for helping a senior student-athlete throughout her high school athletic career in an exceptional and life-changing manner. This person may be a coach, parent, teacher, administrator, etc. Any senior may submit a letter explaining such an individual’s influence. All submitted letters are reviewed by the Principal, the Assistant Principal and the Athletic Directors in order to select a worthy recipient. This year there are two: Cross Country Coach, Carol Beaudette (Johnston, RI), who was nominated by Lili Lan Visiglio (Providence, RI) and Kelly McManus Souza (Providence, RI), the Ice Hockey and Lacrosse coach, who was nominated the senior members of the lacrosse team.

Sister Charlene Tedeschi Scholar-Athlete: The recipient of this award must have played a minimum of two varsity sports in Grades 11 and 12. She must be in the top 10% of her graduating class by GPA. She must also have been an active participant in supporting and promoting Bay View Athletics by service at Open House, Captain's Club, Women in Sports Assembly, Athletic Advisory Committee, Evening Athlete Education Programs and other similar activities. The winner has the endorsement of the Principal and the Assistant Principal, the Athletic Directors and the Coaches of teams on which the candidate has played. This year’s recipient of Bay View’s Sister Charlene Tedeschi Scholar-Athlete Award is Alexandra Scala* (East Providence, RI).

Principal Colleen Gribbin Outstanding Athlete: The winner of the Principal Colleen Gribbin Outstanding Athlete Award must have been selected to All-Division, All-Class or All-State status in at least one sport during the 11th and 12th grade. She must also have demonstrated leadership, a positive attitude, and respect for coaches, teammates, officials and opponents. She has the endorsement of the Athletic Directors, the coaches of the teams on which she candidate played, the Principal and the Associate Principal. The recipients of the award for 2013-2014 are Raquel Pederzani*(Coventry, RI) and Devan Miller* (Bristol, RI).
