Can the Effects of a Pseudotumor Be Reversed?

Some of the common symptoms of pseudotumor include vision problems including blurred vision, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Recent research has found a link between birth control injection Depo-Provera and a serious neurological condition known as “pseudotumor celebri,” which has been known to cause debilitating symptoms including severe headaches, loss of vision and/or hearing and even permanent blindness. If you or someone you love has taken Depo-Provera and has been diagnosed with this condition, which is potentially irreversible, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your monetary losses as well as your pain and suffering. This compensation can be attained through a Depo-Provera lawsuit.

What is Pseudotumor Celebri?

Pseudotumor celebri, which means “false brain tumor,” is essentially a condition in which the pressure around the brain increases leading to vision problems and severe headaches. Its symptoms are strikingly similar to brain tumors. Even though this condition is considered treatable, it could return. Pseudotumor celebri is caused by excessive cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. This condition occurs when the fluid, which is supposed to be naturally absorbed into the bloodstream does not get absorbed, and builds up in the skull causing increased pressure. Some of the common symptoms of pseudotumor celebri include vision problems including blurred vision, ringing in your ears, pain in the neck, back or shoulders, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Can This Condition Be Reversed?

For a number of people, pseudotumor celebri improves with treatment. However, for others, it progressively worsens with time, or it could resolve and then recur. About 5 to 10 percent of women with this condition experience disabling vision loss. This is usually treatable with drugs and by following a weight loss plan, because weight gain makes the symptoms worse. In fact, women who are overweight or obese are more at risk for experiencing this condition.

Health experts have cautioned that hormonal birth control drugs like Depo-Provera may heighten a woman’s risk of experiencing this neurological condition. A study published as early as 1995 identified 56 cases of the condition in women using contraceptives containing the hormone levonorgestrel. In 2012, another report linked Depo-Provera to pseudotumor symptoms in a British woman.
