VIDEO: Derailed Freight Train Draws Rescue Teams to Dexter Road Industrial Complex

Mechanics from Providence & Worcester line are on their way to right the train.

A freight train carrying construction materials was derailed at the corner of Dexter and King Philip roads late Thursday morning, shutting down direct traffic to neighboring facilities. Rescue crews and Special Hazards teams surrounded the scene.

Mechanics from the Providence & Worcester Line were on their way to repair the downed freight train as rescue personnel monitored the cars, according to East Providence Fire Chief Joe Joseph Klucznik.

"We want to make sure we don't make a bad situation worse," the chief said.

A TLA/Pond View backhoe propped up one of the cars while crews waited for a crane to be delivered; a Department of Public Works bulldozer made room for the large piece of equipment as workers repaired a damaged rail line. Firefighters were especially careful to monitor a tank of diesel gas attached to a train car. National Grid arrived on the scene to shut down power on the rails while workers righted the train.

According to fire department personnel, the driver was making a delivery from Canada to one of the Dexter Road companies.
