Employee Hurt after Bakery Explosion in East Providence

Firefighters said four people were inside Taunton Avenue Bakery when there was an explosion Tuesday night.

An employee of Taunton Avenue Bakery in East Providence suffered first and second degree burns to 20 percent of his body after an explosion at the bakery on Tuesday night.

East Providence Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian said that the blast occurred at around 10:15 p.m.

The worker got out of the building on his own and was transported to the hospital.

National Grid shut off gas service to the building and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A total of four workers were inside the building when it exploded, but only one was hurt.

The blast did not appear to cause structural damage to the building, located at 208 Taunton Avenue.

National Grid reportedly had been doing work nearby and were investigating a reported gas leak on Monday.

Loyal customers to the beloved Portuguese bakery posted messages of support on Facebook Wednesday morning.

“Please know that many are saddened by this devastation,” said Janis A. Bogle Mooradian. “We will be there when you re-open.”
