Firefighters Rush to Housing Authority Apartment Complex

Rescue crews are working to extinguish a fire at , an apartment complex for the elderly managed by the East Providence Housing Authority.

The fire chief and other were at the scene located at 99 Goldsmith Ave. as of 9:45 a.m., according to accounts from personnel and scanner reports.

An alarm went off on the 10th floor of the 11-story building, said Captain Oscar Elmasian.

The housing authority manages public housing and the Section 8 rental assistance program for East Providence. The majority of people the authority serves are elderly or disabled. The authority oversees four apartment complexes around the city with a total of more than 400 units: Goldsmith Manor, City View Manor, Harborview Manor, and Warren Ave. Apartments.
