Has anyone listened to you lately?

If you are like most people, the answer to that question is probably “no.”  That’s because talking with someone and really being heard by that person with care and compassion and no judgment is a rare thing indeed.  It is ironic that in our society we are constantly surrounded by people we interact with all the time, and yet no one really listens to each other.  All too often we talk at each other instead of with each other.  And there are things – important things – we need to talk over with someone else as we try to figure out what to do.  Even if we are lucky enough to have someone in our lives who listens to us, they come into that conversation already knowing on some level what they think we should do.  So, if we are faced with a challenging situation – like a job change or a difficult family situation – it’s hard to find someone to talk with who will just listen without giving advice. This is the how and why we get stuck inside of ourselves, unable to see a way forward from where we are to where we would like to be – personally or professionally.
