East Providence Police officers arrested Brad J. Dias, 50, of 49 Byron Ave., in East Providence, after he reportedly attempted to smother his 75-year-old father with a pillow while he was sleeping on June 2, at about 12:20 a.m. The elderly man woke up during the attack and was able to run to a neighbor's house to call the police. In a statement Dias gave to police, he said he tried to kill his father after an argument began earlier between the two, according to Captain Richard Frazier. Dias was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inside a house and felony assault on an elderly person. He was held without bail in the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institute (ACI).
