EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Despite the rain, dozens of people showed up to Old Fashioned Family Fun Day, the East Providence Historical Society's annual open house and home of the Great Rumford Bake-Off. This year's festival was extra special as the society held a ribbon-cutting and dedication of their new education center.

The East Providence Historical Society is housed at Hunts Mills, which includes the historic John Hunt House and remains of the mill. Behind the house sits a small yellow building which once housed the ticket booth for the Rocky Point amusement park and, later, water meters for the City of East Providence. In 2016, the historical society received funding from the Rhode Island ouncil For The Arts and the Champlin Foundation, allowing them to transform the space into a education center, where volunteers can showcase the historical society's historic maps and books.

"We have loved being able to use this space over the past few months, it's just what we needed," said Nancy Moore, one of the historical society's volunteers. "Who know's what's next!"

60 bakers—47 adults and 13 kids—entered this year's Great Rumford Bake-Off competition, the highlight of the day, with cakes, breads and cookies all in the running. The only rule: it has to contain Rumford baking powder. Among the sea of sweets, the judges, which included Mayor DaSilva, one cake rose above the rest. This year's winner was an orange creamsicle cake that DaSilva called "a little taste of summer."
