Peace Celebration/Performance at Weaver Library
Free community event to celebrate peace. Refreshments, live music, peace talks. Special performance by Bill Harley, Grammy Award winner.

EAST PROVIDENCE — On
Wednesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m., The Peace Flag Project (PFP) in
conjunction with the Weaver Library invite the public to join their celebration
of a month-long collaboration on peace. The
project was made possible by a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the
Humanities (RICH) to the Peace Flag Project, a Rhode Island pro-peace
nonprofit. “We are especially proud that the grant to the Peace Flag
Project is the first humanities grant made to a peace organization,” says Ginny
Fox, Executive Director of the Peace Flag Project. “It expands the
definition of ‘humanities’ for the RICH, and it is good news for peace.”
The celebration will take
place at the Weaver Library, located at 41 Grove
Avenue in East Providence and is free and open to the public. The evening
activities will include an unveiling of a peace banner created from the
artwork of children who attended Peace Flag workshops, the music of local
guitarist Barry Brown, a slide show, and light refreshments. In addition,
attendees will hear how the East Providence community --from library patrons
and staff, to English as Second Language students to children -- have defined
peace in their lives. Dr. Paul Bueno de Mesquita and Kay Johnson of the URI
Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies will be on-hand to present the
Peacemaker Awards to participants. The festivities will conclude with a special
performance by Grammy award-winning musician Bill Harley.
Harley,
a songwriter, storyteller, author, performing and recording artist, is also a
man of peace, which is reflected in his repertoire. Bill uses song and story to
paint a vibrant and hilarious picture of American life. “Bill’s music,
full of wit and wisdom is a perfect conclusion to our month long program
imagining, understanding, creating, and being peace,” says Ginny Fox, Executive
Director of the Peace Flag Project.
