PHOTOS: Firefighters Battle Smokey Fire, Cold, Snow Early This Morning

Gray smoke poured from windows and holes cut into a small Cape home early Sunday morning, Feb. 10, as firefighters from multiple East Providence companies battled a fire at a home on the corner of Hazelwood and Spruce streets. The temperature was around 11 degrees.

Firefighters responded around 6:30 am after getting a call from neighbors who said they smelled smoke.

The home is believed to be occupied by an elderly couple. But no one was home. Several family members were on the scene but referred questions to fire officials.

Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian said the same firefighters at the blaze were on duty already for around 48 hours. They had to extinguish a separate smaller fire hours earlier this morning.

"I can't say enough about them," said Elmasian. "I could see the fatigue on their faces after answering all kinds of calls in the storm and then fighting two fires."

About a dozen fire trucks and vehicles were parked on the streets near the home, including a Hazardous Materials vehicle and a Ladder truck.

The fire is believed to have started in the basement and then spread up the walls of the house into the second floor. Both of these levels were fully engaged when firefighters arrived.

The firefighters ran hoses along streets still mostly covered with snow and ice from the blizzard that roared through East Providence on Friday and Saturday and blacked out most of the city until Saturday evening.
