Each year, two students from middle schools across the state are recognized for distinguishing themselves in terms of outstanding scholarship and leadership by Rhode Island Middle Level Educators (RIMLE) and the New England League of Middle Schools (NEMLS). This year, Bay View Academy students, Isabella DeNuccio (seventh grade, East Greenwich, RI) and Lauren Moonan (eighth grade, Cranston, RI) were selected as Bay View’s Scholar Leaders. According to Margaret Cummings (Barrington, RI), the Lower and Middle School Associate Principal and Middle School English teacher, Isabella and Lauren exhibit an excellent attitude toward learning, provide service to their classmates and school, and take responsibility for their own behavior and learning. She states, “they are positive role models for all students.”
Isabella and Lauren were honored as Middle Level Scholar Leaders at a banquet on May 13, 2014 at the West Valley Inn, West Warwick, RI. Their parents also attended the banquet, along with Gail Thompson (North Providence, RI), Middle School math teacher and Margaret Cummings. The students were presented with an award, along with official citations from the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation of Congressmen James Langevin and David Cicilline, and Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse. The criteria for this award included demonstrating academic initiative and scholarship, providing service to classmates and school, exemplifying positive attitudes, and demonstrating leadership in the classroom and school activities.
Sixty-one students from thirty-one schools were honored at the Fifteenth Annual Middle Level Scholar Leaders Award Banquet. The event was organized by the RIMLE and NEMLS, with a supporting sponsorship from Lifetouch National School Studios.
