Walking Distance Hiked for Public School Students

To reduce $500,000 from the transportation budget, 10 buses have been cut from the fleet resulting in extra walking time for some students in the East Providence School District.

According to Ray Linneman, transportation director for the district, the walking distances have been increased as follows:

• walking distance has been changed from 1.5 miles to two miles. Students who live over two miles from the school will be eligible for a bus.
• The middle school walking distance has been changed from 1 mile to 1.5 miles. Students who live over 1.5 miles from school will be eligible for a bus.
• The elementary school walking distance has been changed from .75 mile to 1 mile. Students who live over mile from school will be eligible for a bus.

The scheduling change has also resulting in earlier school start times.

•  - 7:25 a.m. to 1:45p.m.
•  and  - 7: 55 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
• , ,  and elementary schools - 8:40 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
• , , ,  and  elementary schools - 9:10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
