1. Debut author to speak Tuesday (jamestownpress.com) — Jamestown readers and aspiring writers are invited to a free talk with debut novelist and retired professor Debra Curtis at the Jamestown Philomenian Library on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. Curtis will share how she persevered through 150 rejections to publish her novel, offering practical tips and encouragement for locals hoping to get their own work noticed.
   

2. Free jazz concert Saturday at library (jamestownpress.com) — Jamestown residents can catch a free bossa nova and jazz concert today, Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the library on North Road. Vocalist Paula Clare and her band will bring classics like "The Girl from Ipanema" and other Brazilian-inspired tunes for an easygoing afternoon performance right in town.
   

3. Jamestown Recreation Committee to Replace Two Panels (upriseri.com) — Jamestown officials are planning to replace the ad hoc Bike Path and Eldred Field committees with a single recreation advisory committee that would report directly to the Town Council. If approved by ordinance, the new five-to-seven-member panel would start meeting as early as next year, helping set priorities for parks, fields, and recreation projects and giving volunteers more influence in budgeting and grant applications.
   

4. Helen Van Cleef (uri.edu) — A Jamestown native, Helen Van Cleef is finishing a dual law and marine affairs degree focused on protecting New England's coastal waters. After growing up around Narragansett Bay and working for the Rhode Island Attorney General, she's now leading environmental law initiatives and helping local municipalities design practical resilience projects like rain gardens for stormwater runoff.
