2-Hour Standoff After Domestic Knife Attack: Johnston Police
A Johnston man barricaded himself in a bathroom after attacking a woman with a knife, police said,
JOHNSTON, RI — A Johnston man barricaded himself in a bathroom for two hours after attacking a woman with a knife, police said.
The man, 45-year-old Jimmy Estrada, eventually surrendered and was charged with domestic violence assault, the Johnston Police Department said in a media release.
Officers were sent to a residence on Tabor Drive shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of a domestic assault with a knife, according to the release.

"Upon arrival, officers located a 32-year-old female victim who was immediately transported by
Johnston Fire Rescue to the hospital for treatment of injuries later determined t o be non-life-threatening," the release said.

"Estrada subsequently barricaded himself inside a bathroom within the residence and made statements that raised concern for self-harm," the release said.
Estrada also claimed to be armed with a gun but officers had no corroborating information that was the case, according to the release.
Officers established a perimeter and the Johnston Police Department Crisis Negotiation and Special Response teams were called out, as well as members of the Cranston Police Department Special Response Team, the release said.
A licensed mental health clinician from Gateway Healthcare also assisted at the request of police, according to the release.

"After approximately two hours of dialogue with officers and crisis personnel, Estrada voluntarily complied with law enforcement and was taken into custody without incident," the release said.
"He was transported to a hospital for evaluation and remains in police custody," the release said. "Investigators later confirmed that Estrada was not in possession of a firearm."
