What's Flag Day? Today marks a day of celebration for the original adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress on this date in 1777; President Woodrow Wilson created the holiday by proclamation in 1916, and Congress formally adopted Flag Day in 1949. June 14 is also part of "National Flag Week," during which Americans are urged to fly the Stars And Stripes all week.
