What's Closed: and public offices in Johnston (except for the police and fire departments) are closed in honor of the holiday today. Trash and recycling pick-up normally scheduled for today will be tomorrow, Nov. 12.
What It Is: Veterans Day is a holiday dedicated to remembering and honoring those who have served in the armed forces. Originally called "Armistice Day," the name of the holiday was changed in 1954 and formally set on Nov. 11 in 1975.

How To Help: If you're looking to help veterans and their families, Johnston is home to Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, an organization that helps homeless vets find the services they need in the community. They're hosting the Women Warriors luncheon today at the Quidnesset Country Club in North Kingstown to benefit the Holly Charette House in Johnston, a transitional residence for women. How It Started: On this date in 1918 — on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — World War I officially ended with an armistice. President Woodrow Wilson officially named the date a holiday in 1919, and Congress changed the name of the holiday to "Veterans Day" in 1954.
