Another Dog Stolen: 'Jack' In Johnston Is Home Safe But Still Missing: 'Maggie' In Charlestown

Some dog-nappers are apparently cruising neighborhoods looking for dogs alone in their yards or loose on the street.

JOHNSTON, RI — Jack, an English Springer Spaniel, was stolen up on Borden Avenue on Saturday in Johnston, his owner said. But by morning, they were re-united, and he is safe. She posted his information and his picture on the Johnston Patch on Saturday.

Patch readers may remember a story a few weeks ago about Smokey, an English bulldog. The one-year-old pet was stolen from his Wentworth Avenue yard, according to Cranston police. The dog was returned around April 30, and police believe pressure from social media may have persuaded the thieves to return him.

Cranston police Maj. Todd Patalano said previously the police are still investigating that crime. The owner saw a strange car parked near her home intermittently for several days before Smokey was stolen. He was in a fenced-in back yard and was just outside for a brief time when he was grabbed.

Meanwhile, given a similar near dog-napping in Warwick, police are advising people not to leave their dogs outside unattended, even if they have fenced-in yards. Don't leave them alone in cars and don't leave them outside stores, even if you're coming back right away, police also say.

Around the same time Smokey was grabbed, on April 1, Maggie, a three and a half year old Sheltie, was stolen from her fenced in back yard in Charlestown. The circumstances were similar to Smokey's disappearance. She also was let out for a brief time before bed.

As for Jack, someone stopped in a car and grabbed him.
