Cranston Officer Hurt in Johnston Funeral Procession
The officer was part of an escort. According to sources, a car pulled out and collided with the officer's motorcycle.

CRANSTON, RI – A Cranston police officer was injured in Johnston on Thursday, while riding in a funeral escort.
According to Col. Michael Winquist, police chief, the officer is still in the hospital and will undergo surgery later today.
The injured officer, Inspector Andrew DeCosta was on a motorcycle going south on Atwood Avenue, Johnston Deputy police Chief Daniel Perrillo said, when a car pulled out from a private driveway and struck him. The accident happened in front of 1414 Atwood Ave., Johnston, around 11 a.m.

Johnston police have cited the driver for entering the roadway.
DeCosta was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. He suffered a wrist fracture and other minor injuries.

"He was thrown over the handlebars," Col. Winquist said, "and landed on his arm on the pavement." His wrist was fractured in two places, and he also suffered a broken rib and abrasions.
"He's in good spirits," however, the Cranston chief said. The bike, on the other hand, is "a total loss."
