Teacher Of Year Named; High School Grad Rate Hits 82 Percent

Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo announced the results at the Jan. 10 school committee meeting, where the board also recognized the district's teacher of the year.

A little over six months since a Rhode Island Kids Count survey listed Johnston's high school graduation rate at 76 percent, Supt. Dr. Benard DiLullo told the school committee on Jan 10 that 82 percent of eligible students graduated in 2011.

“We are most pleased with the great improvement in graduation rates at the high school,” DiLullo said during the committee's meeting, held at .

According to state statistics, the graduation rate at has improved by 12 points since 2007.

Teacher of the Year Recognized; $300k reimbursement announced

The school committee also congratulated Paula Creamer, literacy coach at Thornton Elementary School, as  the district's teacher of the year.

“We are so fortunate to have you," said committee member Lorraine Iafrate (Dist. 2). "You do wonderful work for our children and our community, and you are an example of a great teacher.”

Also Tuesday night, the school committee offered praise for Business Manager Melissa Devine, who secured a $300,000 reibursement through a federal program that provides medical coverage to retirees who are not yet eligible for Medicare.

The next school committee meeting is scheduled for Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School Library.
