JHS Sports: Panthers Notch 'W,' Softball Starts Today

Johnston's returning upperclassmen set the pace in a 9-4 victory over Scituate in varsity baseball on Apr. 2.

Beginning the 2012 season where they left off last year, the varsity baseball team scored a 9-4 victory over Scituate in the Panthers' home opener on Apr. 2.

The Providence Journal reported that senior Chris Pistacchio led the team with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, with Ryan McKeon tacking on 3 RBI en route to the win for the reigning Division II state champions.

Pitchers Gian Bianchi, Joe Bongiovanni, and James Picchi combined for 8 strikeouts on the defensive side for Johnston, holding Scituate to five hits.

The Panthers also benefited from five errors commited by the Spartans.

Johnston's varsity softball team is scheduled to travel to East Greenwich β€” the site of the Lady Panthers' tough 5-4 loss in the second round of the D-II playoffs last summer β€” for a 3:30 p.m. contest this afternoon.

Following the retirement of Dave Iannuccilli, coach Ed Tutalo helms this year's Johnston squad, which also lost several seniors to graduation after last season.
