JHS Sports: Panthers Notch 'W,' Softball Starts Today

Beginning the 2012 season where they left off last year, the varsity baseball team scored a 9-4 victory over Scituate in the Panthers' home opener on Apr. 2.

The Providence Journal reported that senior Chris Pistacchio led the team with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, with Ryan McKeon tacking on 3 RBI en route to the win for the reigning Division II state champions.

Pitchers Gian Bianchi, Joe Bongiovanni, and James Picchi combined for 8 strikeouts on the defensive side for Johnston, holding Scituate to five hits.

The Panthers also benefited from five errors commited by the Spartans.

Lady Panthers return to action:

Johnston's varsity softball team is scheduled to travel to East Greenwich — the site of the Lady Panthers' tough 5-4 loss in the second round of the D-II playoffs last summer — for a 3:30 p.m. contest this afternoon.

Following the retirement of Dave Iannuccilli, coach Ed Tutalo helms this year's Johnston squad, which also lost several seniors to graduation after last season.
