HS Sports: Hockey Squad 10-0; Panthers Score Hoops Wins

All of the local high school's winter sports teams secured wins in their most recent contests.

The Johnston-North Providence Cougars varsity hockey team posted a 5-0 shutout against Scituate on Jan. 20, extending the co-op team's record to 10-0 and improving its chances for another run at the Division III title.

Freshman Jonathan Alsfeld netted four goals and assisted on senior Mackenzie Olink's score on the way to the Cougars' third straight shutout and sixth overall.

Goalie Matt Domaingue stopped 11 Spartan shots, including two on the power play, to maintain the hold on first place in the division.

The Cougars are next scheduled face Scituate in a rematch on Jan. 28 at Cranston Veterans Ice Rink.

Boys' and Girls' Basketball Teams Win

's varsity basketball teams each secured a victory over their respective opponents last week, with the Lady Panthers outlasting Burrillville, 51-36, on Jan. 18 and the boys nearly hitting the century mark for points in a 96-66 drubbing of Fatima High School the following night.

With the wins, the boys' team maintained its one-game lead over North Smithfield for first place in Division III-North, and the girls improved to 4-3 in Division III-North, tied with Burrillville for fifth place overall.

Next up for the boys is a home game tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Middletown and a Thursday night match-up against Mt. Hope.

The Lady Panthers are scheduled to host two Providence teams this week β€” Classical High School on Wednesday and Hope High School on Friday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
