JHS Sports: Panthers Stay Atop Division

The Johnston High School varsity baseball team improved to 15-1 overall on the strength of a 12-game victory streak dating back to Apr. 11.

Following a 9-0 shutout of Burrillville on May 14, the varsity baseball squad remained in first place in Division II-North with a 15-1 overall record.

Monday's victory extended the Panthers' current win streak to 12 games, dating back to their 6-5 win over the Broncos on Apr. 11.

Sophomore starting pitcher Joe Bongiovanni whiffed 10 batters on the way to a two-hitter against Burrillville, the Providence Journal reported. Senior Chris Pistacchio led the Panthers offense, going 2-for-3 and recording two RBI and two stolen bases.

Johnston is next scheduled to host second-place Woonsocket on Thursday afternoon at , before traveling to Scituate for a game Saturday at noon and wrapping up the season at home on May 21 against Davies Career and Technical High School.

Lady Panthers struggle:

Johnston's varsity softball squad notched its second win of the year on May 2 with a 9-1 victory over Classical High School, followed by four losses, including Monday's 20-3 defeat by East Greenwich.

Lauren Duvall notched five RBI for the Lady Avengers, who tallied 13 runs in the first two innings, the Providence Journal reported.

The Lady Panthers fell to 2-9 on the year in Division II Central, while East Greenwich maintained its hold on the top spot in the district.

Four of Johnston's five remaining games are at home, beginning with Thursday's scheduled 3:30 pm match-up against Exeter/West Greenwich High School at home.

Golf squad tied for third:

The varsity golf team improved to 7-5 on the season, putting Johnston in a tie for third place in the West division, after placing second in a three-way match with Moses Brown and Shea High School on Monday.

Johnston's John Gesualdi led all players with a 38 on the par-36 front 9 at Agawam Hunt Golf Club in Rumford, according to the Providence Journal.

The Panthers previously finished second against North Providence and St. Raphael Academy, and took first overall in their May 2 contest against St. Raphael and Scituate.

Johnston hosts its final match of the year, scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 3 pm, against LaSalle Academy and Tolman High School.
