Gangs of Providence? Johnston Man Indicted For January Drive-By Shooting

The Providence Grand Jury on May 10 returned indictments against six men for a drive-by shooting last January.

JOHNSTON, RI — Joseph Segrain, 33, of Johnston, is among six people indicted by the Interim Grand Jury for a drive-by shooting last January. Segrain is also known as "Black," the Attorney General's office said Friday. Also indicted on May 10 were Nathan Filomeno-Tek, of Pawtucket; John Laboy, of Central Falls; Jose "Pookie" Morales, of Providence, all 19; Eugene McClain, 27, of Providence; and Alexander DeJesus, 23, also known as "Bird," of Pawtucket.

The Providence County Grand Jury reported out an indictment charging them in connection with the Jan. 9, daytime drive by shooting in downtown Providence that left Matthew DePina seriously injured.

According to court papers, they are allegedly members of the "Bucket East" street gang. Police allege they conspired to shoot members of a rival gang, "Bucket West."

Each defendant is charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of discharge of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of conspiracy, two counts of possession of a firearm without a license, and one count of drive by shooting, the Attorney General's office said. Segrain is also charged with possession of a firearm having been previously convicted of a crime of violence.

Segrain and three others -- Filomeno-Tek, Laboy, and McClain -- were arraigned today. Warrants were issued for Morales and DeJesus, who were both apprehended out of state (Morales in Alabama and DeJesus in Massachusetts). They are awaiting extradition.

The state filed notice with the Court that it would be seeking a gang enhancement penalty. If found guilty, and if proven to be associated with a criminal street gang, the defendants will face an additional 10 years to serve.

Bail was set at $25,000 surety, but the four arraigned today are being held. Segrain is being held as a probation violator, while Filomeno-Tek, Laboy, and McClain are in prison for various weapons and drug offenses or in violation of probation.

They are due back in court May 24.
