Lady Panthers Sweep End-Of-Season Series Against Moses Brown

The Johnston High School girls' basketball team locks up second place in their division.

The girls' varsity basketball team ended their season the way they have ended so many of their regular season games: with a win. For the second time in three nights, the Lady Panthers defeated Moses Brown, this time by a score of 59-39 in Providence.

Johnston High improved their record to 16-6 (13-4 in the division), while Moses Brown fell to 9-11 (9-9 in the division). The Lady Panthers finished the regular season in second place, with Mount St. Charles (17-2 overall, 14-1 in the division) finishing first in Division-II North.

The game began with Johnston and Moses Brown trading baskets for the first few minutes before the Panthers took over. After 5 minutes, Johnston had a 13-7 lead and didn't look back. Midway through the half, Johnston's Victoria St. Angelo hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Panthers up 23-11.

Johnston maintained the pressure for the rest of the half, leading 31-14 at the break. Coach Dan Mazzulla removed many of his seniors with 6:30 left in the game and a commanding 53-26 lead. In the next two minutes, the Quakers went on a 6-0 run, before Mazzulla put his seniors back in the game.

Senior captain Alaina DeNoncour led the Panthers with 22, followed by fellow senior captain Megan Macera with 10. Abbey Schreiber led the Quakers with 7 points.

Now that the regular season is over, the attention is turned to the playoffs. With the playoff picture coming into focus in the next few days, Mazzulla pointed out that it's "a one-game season" from here on out.

The coach also reflected on the slight margin between his squad and first-place the first-place Mount St. Charles team.

"A couple of games one way or the other, and we could have won the division," said Mazzulla.
