Lightning U-8 Co-Ed Team Takes First In Division

The Johnston squad's playoff run ends in a 2-1 shootout loss to Teamworks Blue.

The Johnston Lightning Under-8 co-ed squad entered their semifinal game against Teamworks Blue on July 14 in Warwick as the first-place team in their division, but their playoff run was short-lived as the contest ended in a 2-1 shootout.

Johnston — which included three pairs of siblings — posted a 6-2 record for the summer session, while Teamworks Blue entered the semifinal contest with a 3-5 record.

Kylie Marandola, who has been guarding the net all summer for the Lightning, was assigned to her usual goalkeeping post by Coach Dan Robbins.

The Lightning offense got control of the ball many times in the first half and kept their opponents' goalkeeper on his feet, but tight defense resulted in a scoreless tie at the end of the first half, leading to a penalty kick shootout.

Johnston's Emma Salzillo found an opening in the right corner of the net and booted in the only goal for her team before Teamworks Blue sealed the win with two goals.
