Lightning Under-14 Boys Win R.I. Cup

The Johnston Lightning beat Burrillville, 5-1, for the championship title on June 26.

Teamwork, dedication and a passion for playing soccer added up for the Johnston Lightning boys under-14 soccer team on June 26, as they won the Rhode Island Cup in their division, defeating Burrillville, 5-1, at Deerfield Park in Greenville.

Head Coach Mickey LaRosa explained that, after a 4-0 loss in their first game, "the boys turned it around" and posted an overall 5-2-1 record for the session.

"They worked hard, and they deserve to be champs," LaRosa said after the game.

During the match, LaRosa assigned Sam DeCosta to his usual goaltending duties. Johnston didn't waste any time in the first half, as Brian Campanelli made a beeline to his opponents' net and scored twice, with Brian Medeiros booting in the third goal of the first half.

Johnston held Burrillville scoreless and headed into halftime ahead by a score of 3-0.

The Lightning carried their momentum into the second half, as Medeiros once again got possession of the ball and scored the team's fourth goal.

Liam Stamp tacked on the fifth and last goal for the game, with DeCosta letting only one shot past for a 5-1 final tally.
