Parking Ban At Barnes Approved

The Johnston Town Council voted unanimously on Monday night to prohibit parking on Barnes Avenue.

Parents stopping at to pick up their children will no longer be able to park along the street in front of the school — or to block the street when buses are stopped, after the town council held a second vote Monday night to ban parking there.

At their meeting, held at the municipal court, councilors voted 5-0 to formally add Barnes Avenue, from the intersection with Greenville Avenue to the front of the school, to the town's list of streets where parking is prohibited.

A neighbor, Arthur Iannelli, told the council in January that he was worried about the potential hazards posed by parents who stop their cars in the middle of the road at school dismissal times.

At the council's February meeting, where the change to Town Ordinance 220-73
was given first approval, Mayor Joseph Polisena noted that rescue vehicles would be unable to get to the school if cars were blocking the street.

Under the town charter, changes to ordinances require two votes by the town council to be ratified.
