The 's girls softball league held its opening day on April 30 at Woodlake Park. Originally scheduled for April 23, the start to the 2011 season was rescheduled because of rain.
Mayor Joseph Polisena threw the first softball pitch to Amanda Wolfer from the Dimitri Law Firm under-16 team, and Gianna Bordieri, also of Dimitri Law U -16, read the Johnston girls softball mission statement.
There are 200 girls playing in the league between the ages of 6 and 16 on 11 teams. On opening day the girls played exhibition games, and will soon start playing two games a week. The season goes to the third week in June, when the All -tar teams will be chosen.
