March 6 was the final day of the Johnston Recreation Department's winter basketball session.
Department's winter youth basketball leagues wrapped up on March 6 at Ferri Middle school. The last game on Sunday featured the top two seventh- to ninth-grade girls' basketball teams, the Celtics and the Thunder, as the Thunder earned the championship with a 41-29 victory.
"All the players progressed and developed this session," said weekend supervisor Derek Turchetta of the girls who played games twice a week.
There were five basketball teams competing to play in the championship tournament. The Celtics won a berth in the championship game by first beating the Heat, 34-15. The Thunder clinched a spot in the championship game by prevailing over the Lakers in a nail-biting semifinal contest, 33-27.
