Sports Brief: Panthers Earn Second Playoff Win

The varsity baseball team secured another playoff win on May 26, defeating the Juanita Sanchez Cavaliers, 6-4, at Memorial Park.

It was the second win in as many nights for the Panthers, the number-one seed in Division II. On May 25, Johnston beat the visiting Mt. Hope Huskies, 5-2.

The Panthers took an early 4-0 lead, and replied with two scores after the visitors tallied a run in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 6-1. Johnston also staved off a late Sanchez rally that brought the Cavaliers within two.

Senior captain Ryan Geraghty led off the Panther scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Greg Doutre and Nick Loffredo added to the Johnston offense in the fourth, with Doutre hitting an RBI double and Loffredo bringing in two runners with a single.

Johnston now awaits its next opponent for a scheduled May 28 game that will determine the regional winner.
