Larceny Suspect Turns Himself into Middletown Police
Hilliard Robert McBride, 40, of Newport, is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses, police said.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — Hilliard Robert McBride, 40, of Newport, turned himself into Middletown police on Feb. 24 at 11:09 a.m. He is charged with Obtaining money (less than $1,500) under false pretenses, which is a misdemeanor.
According to the arrest report, McBride on Feb. 13 around 9:34 p.m. went to the CVS on East Main Road and allegedly asked for a refund for merchandise for which he did not have a receipt. He also allegedly told the cashier he bought the items at the Bellevue Avenue CVS.
The cashier gave him a CVS money card for $64.18. Later, the cashier told police she checked with the Bellevue Avenue store and was told no such items had been purchased recently. After reviewing surveillance footage, police indicated McBride and a woman companion had entered the store empty-handed and then appeared to have taken the two items from a store display.

McBride was arraigned on Feb. 24 in Second District Court, police said.
