Person In Distress Rescued From Frigid Waters of Purgatory Chasm: Middletown FD
A rescue swimmer was deployed in the operation, according to the fire department
MIDDLETOWN, RI — A person in distress was rescued from the frigid waters of Purgatory Chasm, according to the Middletown Fire Department.
Fire and police started receiving 911 calls "reporting an individual in distress in the water near the chasm" shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, the department said in a media release.
"Given the location, conditions, and complexity of the incident, a technical rope and marine response were immediately initiated," the release said.

"Recognizing the need for additional specialized resources and personnel, mutual aid was
requested from the Newport Fire Department, Portsmouth Fire Department, Jamestown
Fire Department, and Naval Station Newport Fire Department," according to the release.
The Middletown Fire Department deployed a rescue swimmer who secured the person in distress, who was taken to Newport Hospital, the release said.
