Third Beach in Middletown and King Park Beach in Newport Cleared for Swimming

The announcement from the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) was made around 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) officials early Saturday evening recommended the reopening of King Park Main Beach in Newport and in Middletown for swimming.

The recommendation was based on results from water samples that showed bacteria levels within acceptable limits.

DOH officials said they will continue to monitor the water quality regularly to assure safe bathing throughout the summer season.

The two beaches had been recommended for closure on Friday due to high bacteria levels in recent water samples collected this week following rain.

The closure of Third Beach in Middletown did not affect Peabody's Beach, also located on Third Beach Road.
