5 Things: Medicare, Volunteers And Rooftop Decks

Five things to know today in South Kingstown, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012:

1. Stay healthy. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island will host an informational Medicare meeting for individuals who are about to be 65 years old and eligible to enroll in Medicare as well as for those who are retiring and will no longer have health insurance coverage through an employer. These meetings are ideal for people who want to learn more about initial election periods and the general Medicare process. It's also an opportunity to learn about the plans available from BCBSRI. Light refreshments will be served.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at , 191 Old Tower Hill Road

2. Make a difference in your community. Head over to the Kingston Free Library for a Community Volunteer Presentation at 7 p.m., 2605 Kingstown Road. Highlights of the event include a power point presentation on volunteers in action, a discussion by the Independent Aging Manager and a testimonial from a volunteer.  Coordinator Kathy Rosum will help find the volunteer opportunity that best suits you. 3. It's a busy day in government today in South Kingstown:

  • The Zoning Board of Review will meet today at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, 180 High St. The Phil's expansion project - which includes a rooftop deck and a 90-seat performance hall for the Contemporary Theater Company - will be up for a vote. For the full agenda, click here.
  • The Town Council will hold a work session today at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center, 25 Saint Dominic Road. A local engineer and an LED-type sign manufacturer will make a presentation to the council to help them revise the sign ordinance so that is reflective of current lighting and sign technology. 4. Looking for some action? Get your fix and support local high school athletics at one of today's games.

  • The Prout School Girls Basketball team will play against the Warwick Veterans at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium, 215 Columbia St., Wakefield. The junior varsity team hits the court at 5:15 p.m.
