Community Corner

The Narragansett Youth Basketball Association strives to lead the league with "assists" on the court and also with the local community.

During the 2011 NYBA Tip-Off Classic, the NARRAGANSETT YOUTH BASEKTBALL ASSOCIATION put their best efforts into thinking about families in the community during the holiday season.  John Cameron, NYBA Board Member and Coach for the 10 year old boys division, led the efforts by organizing the first NYBA Food Drive.

The league as a whole, collected 5 large bins of food with over 300 items (estimated at 300+ pounds of food) over the weekend of the tournament.  On 12/10/11 Mr. Cameron (pictured) and his son and NYBA player, Colin Cameron (pictured), dropped off the items to the Jonnycake Center in South Kingstown.  The Executive Director Susan Gustaitis (also pictured) was "thrilled with the donation".

According the the President of NYBA, Mike Clancey, "The league strives to highlight a theme of dedication, hardwork, good sportsmanship and teamwork both on an off the court." The NYBA consists of 9 teams, ages 9 through 13, both boys and girls.  The season runs every year from November through March with the various teams competing in competitive basketball tournaments throughout the state.  The players also compete in a developmental league with other teams in RIYBA to foster the idea teamwork and good sportsmanship.  The league commented that the efforts of sharing with the community really lines up with these goals.  The NYBA feels that this theme of giving to others "is here to stay" and that the league will hopefully sponsor more volunteer led opportunites throughout the season.
