Empty Paddleboard Prompts Search Near Block Island

NEW SHOREHAM, RI — An abandoned paddleboard prompted a Coast Guard search for a possible missing person in the water near Block Island on Monday afternoon. A spokesperson for the Coast Guard's Northeast District said the paddleboard and a life jacket were found a little before 1 p.m. A rescue helicopter was deployed from Air Station Cape Cod and a cutter was sent from Station Point Judith.

It is not confirmed if a person is actually missing at this time, officials said, but crews continue to comb the area. No sightings have been reported at this time.
