Coronavirus In RI: URI Latest School To Cancel In-Person Classes

Online instruction will begin on March 23 and last until at least April 3, school officials said.

KINGSTON, RI — The University of Rhode Island is the latest school in the state to cancel in-person classes for the near future. All graduate and undergraduate classes will be canceled until March 20, after which online instruction will be held until at least early April.

"This is a difficult and extraordinary situation, and we recognize that people throughout our community are concerned for their personal health and that of their families and friends," the university said in a statement.

An information hotline for students, families, faculty and staff will go live at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Anyone with questions can call 401-874-3082 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Following spring break this week, classes will be canceled until March 20. From the 23 through at least April 3, all classes will be conducted remotely. Faculty will be in touch with students about individual classes before online classes begin.

Any students who are completing internships or clinicals are asked to follow the recommendations of their employers. Staff will remain on campus and offices will be open as usual.

Starting Friday, all scheduled events with 100 or more attendees will be postponed or canceled until at least April 3. Sporting events will go on as scheduled, though no fans will be allowed to attend.
