SPECIAL DUKE ELLINGTON BIRTHDAY BASH FEATURING THE SUN RA ARKESTRA, SUN APRIL 29th at KNICKERBOCKER CAFE!
"From swing to bebop to avant-garde to retro mainstream; blending theater, ritual and music, the Arkestra continues in orbit around Sun Ra," says the Los Angeles Times.
Known for tying together the jazz of many eras from the 1920's to the present, the Sun Ra Arkestra founded by its late leader, Herman Blount (aka Sun Ra) are said to have shows "as close to intergalactic parties as any of us will experience."
Now led by long time member and alto saxophonist, Marshall Allen, the band also includes well known trumpeter, Michael Ray (Kool & the Gang, Cosmic Crewe).
It's sure to be a special night when the Arkestra hits the Knick with their Duke Elliington tribute in celebration of his birthday. They will bring their brand of cosmic jazz and showmanship; and an extended feature of Ellington's big band standards with the classic arrangements will highlight the night.
