Suspect Left Overnight In Courthouse Cell: State Police

The state police are holding a press conference to discuss an incident that happened Friday at the McGrath Judicial Complex in Wakefield.

SCITUATE, RI—The state police are holding a press conference to discuss an incident that happened Friday at the McGrath Judicial Complex in Wakefield.

The Division of Sheriffs reported that a person who was ordered released on personal recognizance after an appearance in Superior Court on Thursday afternoon was held overnight in the holding cell of the courthouse after court personnel had left for the day, state police said. Sheriffs discovered the individual was still there after reporting to work at approximately 8 a.m. today. The individual was immediately released.

Colonel Assumpico immediately placed a deputy sheriff on administrative leave. She further ordered the Rhode Island State Police to thoroughly investigate.

She further ordered members of the Rhode Island State Police to conduct a thorough review of the Division of Sheriff’s policies and procedures, especially those regarding the custody and care of people in their custody.
