SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A girl scout from Wakefield has earned the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, by creating a fairy garden at the South Kingstown Land Trust.

The main objective of Keely Grady's project was "to get more children outdoors to participate in a fun, eco-friendly activity." During the project, Grady designed and built the fairy garden, created a sign, and built fencing using materials that she found in nature, to make her project sustainable and eco-friendly.

She said her project addressed the issue of children not having enough outdoor activities that are aimed at having them be creative and have fun with nature.

"My favorite part about Girl Scouts was the relationships I created with a group of girls, some of these relationships wouldn't have been created without Girl Scouting," Grady said. "I look back at the very beginning, with a group of young girls starting at Matunuck Elementary School, we had no idea what we were signing up for."

"What I didn't know at the time was the adventures and friendships I would create in the years to come," Grady added. "I will always remember these years, and everything Girl Scouting has taught me. Girl Scouts has given me the opportunity to create bonds with girls that wouldn't have happened without these moments.
