Narragansett Police Name 2 New School Resource Officers

By adding Officers Ajanae Scavone and James Fitzgerald, Narragansett now has three school resource officers working in the district.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — Narragansett Police Chief Sean Corrigan announced the appointment of two new school resource officers (SRO).

Officers Ajanae Scavone and James Fitzgerald will serve as school resource officers, Corrigan said Wednesday. Scavone will be assigned to the elementary school, while Fitzgerald will work at Pier Middle School. Fitzgerald replaces Officer Kevin O’Connor, who took another position within the police department.

School resource officers' responsibilities maintaining a safe and secure environment at school and during special events, providing counsel and guidance to school administrators regarding school safety, building positive relationships with students and staff, and providing safety presentations and programs.

Scavone has been a patrol officer in Narragansett since 2015. She has completed training in crisis intervention and mental health first aid.

She also assisted with the department's citizens' police academy in 2017 and 2018, and has served as a guest speaker at the University of Rhode Island and Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, where she talked with students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. Scavone has received community acknowledgements for participating in community outreach initiatives, assisting people experiencing mental health crises, and in recognition of her skills as an investigator.

From 2016 to 2019, Scavone served as the head coach for girl's basketball at the Pier School.

Fitzgerald has served as a patrol officer since 2010. He has completed training in crisis intervention, youth crisis intervention and mental health first aid, and is working toward certification in car seat safety and installation. Additionally, he is a citizens' police academy facilitator and a certified ALICE active shooter training instructor.

He has been recognized with the 100 Club's Special Merit Award in recognition of outstanding commitment and service to the community, and a certificate of commendation. He has also received several community acknowledgements and "Positive Guardian" recognitions.

In May, the Narragansett Town Council approved adding a third school resource officer to serve the elementary school. In addition to Scavone and Fitzgerald, Officer Kyle Rooney continues to serve as the SRO at Narragansett High School.

"I am grateful to the Town Council for approving a third SRO and supporting our department in providing the safest possible learning environment for students and staff," Corrigan said. "I am confident that Officers Scavone and Fitzgerald will each be a great resource for the elementary and middle school communities."
