New Year's Day Plunges Cancelled In Newport & Narragansett

The City says the Polar Plunge is cancelled due to dangerous weather. The Penguin Plunge at Roger Wheeler State Beach is also postponed.

NEWPORT, RI—Newport and Narragansett will follow Jamestown in scuttling the New Year's Day plunge, due to dangerously cold temperatures. A Wish Come True and Special Olympics will hold a plunge at a future date to be decided.

As of 8:32 a.m. Jan. 1, the MENTOR Rhode Island plunge at Goddard Park in East Greenwich is off. But the obstacle course is still on.

The temperatures forecast for tomorrow range from zero to the minus double digits when the wind chill is factored in. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in within 30 minutes, according to Newport's fire Chief Brian T. Dugan, Sr. He is asking people not to go in the water.
