PHOTOS: Langevin Nominates South County Students to Service Academies

Congressman Jim Langevin has nominated Kailey Smith of Saunderstown, Peter Myer of Wakefield & John Patrick O'Neill of Wakefield

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) congratulates Kailey Smith, John Patrick O'Neill, and Peter Myer on receiving principal nominations to United States Service Academies.

Prout School senior Kailey Smith received Langevin's principal nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Smith is president of her class, captain of the school’s swim team, and is a member of the National Honors Society. Smith, who lives in Saunderstown, also received two Good Citizenship Citations and participated in All-State Junior and Senior Orchestra.

John Patrick O’Neill of Wakefield receiving Langevin's principal nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. O’Neill is a senior at the Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania, where he has held numerous leadership positions. He competes on the school’s basketball team, is a member of the Legion Guard and the Honor Council, and served as vice president of the Student Council. O’Neill has studied abroad at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in England and, closer to home, donated his time as part of Valley Forge’s Community Service Club.

South Kingstown High School senior Peter Myer also received a principal nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Myer, who lives in Wakefield, has competed in cross-country, swimming, lacrosse, and indoor track for South Kingstown High School. He is a member of the National Honors Society, National Spanish Honors Society, and participated in All-State Orchestra. Myer has also logged more than 300 hours of community service, giving back to the Kettle Pond Wildlife Refuge, Gilbert Stuart Museum, St. Francis Church, and the Matunuck Fire Department. He has a longstanding interest in the military, having participated in the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar.
